Mets face trade deadline ‘bidding war’ for Cubs’ Willson Contreras with AL contender

Billy Eppler is on the clock.

The New York Mets general manager has five days to wheel and deal before the Aug. 2 trade deadline.

He and the Mets continue to be linked to Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras. But New York isn’t alone in chasing the three-time All-Star. In fact, the Chicago Tribune reports there could be a “bidding war” for Contreras’ services.

The New York Mets reportedly have been in the mix for a while, but the Astros are desperate for a two-way catcher. … Contreras would be a significant upgrade for the Astros, who are fighting with the New York Yankees for the best record in the majors — and that would mean home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

Earlier this week MLB insiders Alyson Footer, Jon Morosi and Mark Feinsand discussed the market for Contreras.

Per MLB.com, Footer said, “I can’t help but think the Astros might be the best landing spot.”

Morosi responded, “I love the Astros as a fit for Contreras.”

Feinsand agreed that “The Astros make perfect sense to me. So do the Mets. James McCann is signed beyond this season, but he’s been banged up and struggling most of the season, and Contreras is signed for only this year.”

The 30-year-old Contreras is making $9.625 million this year and will be a free agent after the season.

He’s perhaps the best bat on the trade market, hitting .258 with 14 home runs this season.
