Dow up nearly 100 points on gains in Visa, Merck stocks

Buoyed by strong returns for shares of Visa and Merck, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is trading up Friday morning. Shares of Visa V, +1.39% and Merck MRK, +1.37% are contributing to the blue-chip gauge’s intraday rally, as the Dow DJIA, +0.15% is trading 92 points (0.3%) higher. Visa’s shares are up $3.55, or 1.7%, while those of Merck have risen $1.22, or 1.4%, combining for an approximately 31-point boost for the Dow. Chevron CVX, +0.98%, Caterpillar CAT, +0.81%, and Microsoft MSFT, +1.05% are also contributing significantly to the gain. A $1 move in any of the index’s 30 components equates to a 6.58-point swing.
