Moderna  (MRNA) – Get Report is joining the S&P 500 on July 21.

S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that the vaccine maker and pharmaceutical company is replacing Alexion Pharmaceuticals  (ALXN) – Get Report on that day. AstraZeneca  (AZN) – Get Report is acquiring Alexion Pharmaceuticals in a $39 billion takeover deal.

Investors are excited about Moderna’s latest news, which is reflected in its stock price as the stock opened more than 6% higher to $275.79 Friday. Moderna shares have surged over 215% in the past year.

The company also posted a strong first quarter this year, with revenue rising to $1.9 billion.

Moderna is expected to deliver up to 1 billion doses of its coronavirus vaccine this year.
